Board on Children, Youth, and Families
Mission:
The Board on Children, Youth, and Families addresses a variety of policy-relevant issues related to the health and development of children, youth, and families. It does so by convening experts to weigh in on matters from the perspective of the behavioral, social, and health sciences. The Board operates under the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.
Overview:
Drawing on the scientific community in child development, health, education, demography, family economics, and other relevant disciplines, the Board carries out a variety of projects. Board activities encompass convening functions that bring together individuals with mutual interests to exchange ideas, coordinate projects, and build consensus; large-scale studies that address and make recommendations on issues of national importance; and shorter-term projects such as workshops and focused reports that examine more time-sensitive issues concerning children and families. Subject areas addressed include welfare and children’s development, child care, bilingual education, family violence, child and youth labor, the health and well-being of immigrant children and families, adolescence and youth development, child health, early childhood programs, and federal statistics on children and youth.
Under the Board there are both ongoing and short-term studies that try to satisfy the mission of both The National Academies and a specific project goal.
