Background

An ad hoc committee will organize a two-day public workshop to review relevant research studies that illustrate the array of methods associated with research on family structure, processes, and relationships; to identify the relative contributions of selected study methodologies; and to identify research and training opportunities to improve the quality of the knowledge base in this field that would enhance understanding of interactions between family environments and child health and development. The committee would meet once to identify relevant research studies that could inform the activity, prepare a preliminary workshop agenda, commission two research papers, and identify prospective speakers and audiences for the workshop and summary report. Following the workshop, the committee would review key highlights from the presentations and would synthesize discussions for the summary report. The report would be reviewed in accordance with the policies of the National Research Council prior to release.
